As spring arrives, our team turns its attention to one of the most visible parts of the community: landscaping. Beautiful grounds do not happen by chance. They come from thoughtful planning, seasonal preparation, and steady attention to detail.
After winter, I take a proactive approach to refreshing outdoor spaces. My goal is to keep them visually appealing, safe, and enjoyable for residents. As the Senior Regional Director of Plant Operations over Buckingham Senior Living, I focus on the steps that help the community look its best each spring.
When preparing for a seasonal refresh, I take a resident-focused approach. I prioritize the areas that most directly affect daily use, safety, and enjoyment.
My team begins by evaluating walkways, entry points, and outdoor seating areas. We make sure these spaces remain clean, safe, and accessible. From there, we focus on highly used resident spaces, such as courtyards and patios.
I also work closely with our landscaping vendor. Together, we determine which plant materials can recover after winter and which need replacement. We schedule projects that do not immediately impact resident safety or experience for later phases.

Earlier this spring, we revitalized several outdoor gathering spaces used by residents and visiting families. The project included trimming overgrowth, refreshing containers, replacing damaged plants, and improving the overall layout.
These updates created a more inviting environment. To minimize disruption, the team completed the work in phases over several weeks. We also stayed in close communication with our vendor throughout the process.
To keep projects organized and efficient, I use both digital tracking and hands-on oversight. We use TELS to assign and monitor tasks. I also maintain a property-specific checklist that aligns with the layout of our grounds.
This process helps us review each section methodically. It also helps ensure no areas are overlooked. During larger projects, I complete routine walkthroughs to verify progress, maintain quality standards, and address unexpected issues.
Each spring, we often find hidden winter damage. These concerns usually appear in areas that were less visible during colder months. Common issues include plant loss, soil shifting, drainage concerns, and irrigation systems that need recalibration after winter dormancy.
To stay ahead of these challenges, we schedule time for thorough inspections before the busy season begins. Addressing concerns early helps prevent larger issues later in the year.
Looking ahead, I plan to focus on consistency and efficiency during seasonal transitions. This includes working with vendors earlier to set clear expectations and timelines. It also means refining how we track and review completed work.
I also want to select more durable plant varieties that require less frequent replacement. Overall, the goal is to create a smoother, more proactive process that delivers high-quality results year after year.
It is easy to see the finished product, but real success comes from teamwork. Coordination, accountability, and pride help bring each project together. These efforts ensure Buckingham Senior Living continues to meet the standards residents expect while setting the tone for the months ahead.
