Every great meal starts with someone who cares.
Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

As Culinary Director at Buckingham, I have spent 20 years serving residents and building relationships through food. What began as a chef role became something much more meaningful. Over time, I fell in love with the work and the people.
Serving meals in senior living feels more fulfilling than working in a traditional restaurant. The connection is closer and more personal. Residents become familiar faces, trusted voices, and sometimes longtime friends. Some residents have even known my grandparents, which makes those relationships feel even more special.
Senior living also creates more opportunities for feedback. Residents share what they enjoy and what they would like to see done differently. Some suggestions are helpful, and some are challenging. Each one has helped me grow and become a better chef.
Residents have also opened my eyes to different points of view. Their stories and opinions have encouraged me to better myself. They have also helped me come out of my social shell.
Some of my favorite traditions involve residents being part of the experience. Chili cookoffs are always special because they bring fun, friendly competition, and conversation. Another favorite is bringing in fresh corn on the cob and hosting a shucking party. Residents enjoy sharing stories during those moments, and that makes the tradition even more meaningful.
Success in culinary in senior living takes patience and listening. It means hearing what residents are asking for and doing your best to make it happen. Charm also goes a long way. It can brighten the day for residents who are happy, and it can soften moments with those who may be having a harder day.
Growing up with grandparents also helped shape the way I serve. It gave me an appreciation for older adults and the importance of care, respect, and connection. Those qualities matter just as much as skill in the kitchen.
One moment that reminds me this work makes a difference is when families say thank you. When they thank me for taking good care of their parents, it means everything. It shows that food, hospitality, and daily care can bring comfort not only to residents, but also to the people who love them.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
